Finding “absolute” parallaxes directly

چکیده

We develop the formalism for estimating parallaxes, proper motions and positions from long-focus astrometric observations as well as additional extraneous reference material whenever this is available and relax the constraints on the star parameters (basically their sums and correlations with the coordinates on the frames), thus generating (albeit correlated) quasiobservations whose inclusion would make the solutions determinate even if there were no extraneous reference material. The result are data on the same system to which the reference material is referred, so that there is no need to perform the “reduction from relative to absolute” as an afterthought.

Bias in Absolute Magnitude Determination from Parallaxes

Relations are given for the correction of bias when mean absolute magnitudes are derived by the method of reduced parallaxes. The bias in the case of the derivation of the absolute magnitudes of individual objects is also considered.

Hipparcos absolute magnitudes for metal rich K giants and the calibration of DDO photometry

Parallaxes for 581 bright K giants have been determined using the Hipparcos satellite. We combine the trigonometric parallaxes with ground based photometric data to determine the K giant absolute magnitudes. For all these giants, absolute magnitude estimates can also be made using the intermediate band photometric DDO system (Janes 1975, 1979). We compare the DDO absolute magnitudes with the ve...

Absolute measurements of trigonometric parallaxes with astrometric satellites

The concept of absolute trigonometric parallax measurements is formulated in strict mathematical terms, in connection with the widely discussed plans for a future astrometric space mission. The parallaxes determined for a large number of stars spread all over the sky are absolute if the expected error (accidental or systematic) of the zero–point, as well as other large–scale distortions are ord...

Bias Properties of Extragalactic Distance Indicators.XI. Methods to Correct for Observational Selection Bias for RR Lyrae Absolute Magnitudes from Trigonometric Parallaxes Expected from the FAME Astrometric Satellite

A short history is given of the development of the correction for observation selection bias inherent in the calibration of absolute magnitudes using trigonometric parallaxes. The developments have been due to Eddington, Jeffreys, Trumpler and Weaver, Wallerstein, Ljunggren and Oja, West, Lutz and Kelker after whom the bias is named, Turon Lacarrieu and Crézé, Hanson, Smith, and many others. As...

Parallaxes and Distance Estimates for Fourteen Cataclysmic Variable Stars

I used the 2.4 m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below 1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A Bayesian method which combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and absolute ma...
